The inaugural Great Ferry Race will bring a pack of runners to Bainbridge roads Sunday, July 1 and motorists are being cautioned to eye roadside shoulders and be especially cautious around intersections.

Roads will not actually close during the run, though police officers will reportedly be stationed at some of the busier intersections to temporarily hold traffic when necessary as runners cross.

The race, organized by Orca Running, begins at the Winslow ferry terminal.

Runners will walk onto the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., then walk off the boat on the island and start racing at the Bainbridge terminal.

Ultimately, the course concludes at the farmers market, outside city hall.

The half marathon course is run entirely on sidewalks and the shoulders of the road, according to organizers Porter Bratten and Ashley Lee, as well as several island trails.

The run is capped at 600 runners max, organizers said.
