To the editor:
We are voting “no” on this levy.
It fails to provide any infrastructure for expanded public transportation, pedestrian paths outside school areas, or any modern solutions to transport such as provisions for the use of low speed electric vehicles on the Island.
Instead, the levy request confirms and compounds the Island’s bias in favor of the few who travel by bicycle, and against the rest of us.
Further, although the resolution for the levy offer requires that projects destroy the environment “as little as possible,” one should remember that the Multi-Modal Transportation Committee (still focused on bicycle paths despite the name change, see http://www.bainbridgewa.gov/237/Multi-Modal-Transportation-Advisory-Comm) oversaw the design of the little-used STO which morphed from a 12-foot trail to a horrific 36-foot clearcut.
The chair of that committee has expressed dismay that the council has indicated it would not put that committee in charge of the levy money, because, as he put it, that committee has the most knowledge of the bike path projects that are needed. At the same meeting, that chair advised he had not heard of low speed electric vehicles.
Have no doubt that this is really just a bike shoulder path Levy sprinkled with some paths to schools rather than a levy to improve transportation options for all of us.
