Right out of the gate, and on the way to State.
In their first swimming & diving meet of the season, the Bainbridge Spartans easily overpowered O’Dea.
Bainbridge won 10 of 12 events, and Spartans in seven races had qualifying times for the state 3A championships.
The first Spartans to punch their tickets to state were Bainbridge’s two relay teams in the 200-yard medley relay.
The fearsome foursome of Garrett Waite, Kevin Houseman, Andrew Witty and Carter Hall placed first with a time of 1:38.49. (The state qualifying time is 1:43.00.)
The Spartan team of Ian Lipton, Max Eyrich, Alex Miller and Jude Wenker placed third in the race, with a state-qualifying time of 1:42.29.
Waite also qualified for state with his first-place win in the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 52.64. (The state 3A qualifying time is 54.50.)
Wenker also claimed a state-trip time in the 100-yard freestyle. He took first place in 46.80 (state qualifying time is 49.40).
Chapman advanced to state in the 500-yard freestyle, winning the race against O’Dea with a time of 4:54.95. (The state 3A qualifying time is 4:57.00.)
In the 200-yard freestyle race, Bainbridge placed first with a state time of 1:31.09 with the team of Wenker, Oskar Bannister, Eyrich and Houseman.
Waite qualified for another race at state with his first-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 53.83, with more than a second to spare in front of the state-advancing mark of 55.00.
Houseman and Witty went one-two in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Houseman placing first in 57.37 and Witty in second with 1:01.78. Both surpassed the state-qualifying time of 1:02.00.
Spartan Coach Kaycee Taylor said the Spartan win was “an early season statement.”
“The Spartans and Irish have a long-standing rivalry with the last win for O’Dea over a decade ago, but this year’s team was looking to try to upset us in our home pool,” Taylor noted.
It didn’t happen for the Fighting Irish, however, as the Spartans had 116 points to the 69 put up by O’Dea.
“All and all, a great first showing by the team, even though we were not yet at full strength with some athletes absent,” Taylor added. “It was the first step to our goal of an undefeated Metro League dual meet season.”
