WEDNESDAY, FEB. 20

2:41 p.m. A 48-year-old Bainbridge Island woman called police to report she’d been swindled in the online purchase of a used vehicle, the condition of which was grossly worse than the seller had represented.

The woman said she’d paid $16,000 for the car. Upon accepting delivery and being dubious about its condition, she took it to an island mechanic for inspection and was told it was only worth the usable parts that could be culled from it.

Additionally, the woman received overdue notices from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority showing a different vehicle, with the same temporary tags as the one she bought, running through the toll lane. The woman was in Washington at the time of the offense.

Police explained her complaint was a civil matter and provided documentation.
