The Bainbridge Island City Council is poised to approve a potential $672,000 contract with the architecture firm of Coates Design, Inc. for final design services for the city’s police station/municipal court project.

The city council agreed to buy the Harrison medical building on Madison Avenue in late March, with plans to convert it into a public safety facility. The city paid CHI Franciscan $8.975 million for the medical building and 3.3-acre property.

Now, the council is considering a new professional services agreement with Coates Design so the firm can come up with a detailed design for the facility’s retrofit.

According to the city, the contract will cover the complete design of the project, including construction documents and services through construction contract bidding.

The actual contract amount is $672,628.

The agreement will run through Dec. 31, 2021.

According to a fee projection summary provided by Coates Design, basic architectural and structural engineering services will total $517,011.

Additional services, such as landscape design, civil engineering, surveying and other work needed through the bid/negotiations phase total $155,617. Hourly rates for Coates employees will range from $120 to $180 an hour.

Coates Design has been involved in the police station/court project since 2016, when the company was picked to prepare site evaluations for a new police station, complete a space needs analysis, and perform general design services.

At the council’s meeting Tuesday, council members unanimously decided to add the agreement to the consent agenda for final approval at their May 14 meeting.
