To the editor:
Steven Grassia offers some good ideas on dealing with homelessness locally. (“305 homeless camp requires action by city,” Bainbridge Island Review, April 30, 2019)
At the same time he hits on an important point: “political will” is necessary to solve these kind of problems.
Of course we need to stop the causes of homelessness nationally and that is where our calls and letters to our representatives will help.
Right now Congress is considering increasing funds for the Housing Choice Vouchers program (Section 8), since it currently serves only 25 percent of those who qualify. $5 billion more for that program will allow for inflation and help 340,000 more families with housing.
So use your voice locally and nationally to create the political will for this increase and to end the tragedy of homelessness.
