The price of school lunches may go up in Bainbridge Island public schools.

District officials have asked the Bainbridge Island School Board to increase meal prices for the coming school year.

If approved by the board, lunch prices will rise for the first time in three years.

Under the proposal before the board, meal prices for students in kindergarten through fourth grade would rise by 40 cents. Meals for fifth through eighth grades would rise by 50 cents, and meals for high schoolers and adults would go up by 75 cents.

The cost of lunches would be $3.65 for kindergarten through fourth grade; $3.75 for fifth and sixth grade; $4 for seventh and eighth grade; $4.50 for high schoolers; and $5 for adults.

Breakfast and milk prices would not change.

District officials said the proposed rates for the Bainbridge Island School District will be consistent with those charged in school districts of “similar socioeconomic status,” such as Mercer Island and Issaquah.

The increase in meal prices will not change the reduced meal rates available for eligible students, officials added.
