JV hoopers finish season strong

The Bainbridge High Spartans boys junior varsity basketball team ended the season on a high note.

The Bainbridge High Spartans boys junior varsity basketball team ended the season on a high note.

The team went 4-3 in its last seven games against top competition.

“Really proud of the way we finished the season and the way we played those last seven games,” noted JV Coach Henry Guterson.

The strong run to the finish started Jan. 25, as Bainbridge battered Rainier Beach 52-45.

Ben Beatie finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans. Blake Bieber contributed nine points, including 6-for-6 shooting from the foul line in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.

Bainbridge outscored Beach 20-to-10 in the final stanza to put the Vikings away.

The Spartans followed up the big win with an even more amazing victory — a 50-48 overtime win against Chief Sealth.

“We won on a buzzer beater, going full court to score in 3.8 seconds. Beautiful pass by Casey Brink, catch-and-pass by Max Wickline, and shot by Kyle Jackson led to the buzzer beater in a play we call ‘VALPO,’” Coach Guterson recalled.

Jackson had 11 points in two quarters of playing time. Bieber added eight points and five assists, and Beatie continued to impress with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

A strong Lakeside team, which posted just one loss in the season, stopped the Spartans 63-50.

Dawson Gonwick had six points and 13 rebounds for BHS, and battled impressively against Lakeside’s bigs.

Bieber sank four three-pointers in the first half and ended with 16 points.

The promising finish bodes well for next year, the coach said.

“I look forward to watching these players develop between now and next season,” Guterson said.
