Bainbridge Island schools ramped up security measures Friday in response to the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn. that left 20 students dead.

Pam Keyes, spokeswoman for the Bainbridge Island School District, said school principals were immediately contacted after news of the tragedy broke.

Staff reviewed emergency procedures and crisis/emergency plans at island schools, and Keyes noted an increased police presence around Bainbridge schools.

Access to schools is also being restricted.

Parents and visitors to Woodward Middle School, Sonoji Sakai Intermediate, Captain Johnston Blakely Elementary, Ordway Elementary and Captain Charles Wilkes Elementary will be restricted to using only the main entrance.

Parents and visitors must immediately check in to the main office when arriving at any school.

The heightened security procedures will be kept in place until the holiday break starts when classes end on Dec. 21.
