Add 42 yoga mats, three autoharps, and 22 old film cameras, and what do you get?

Just a few of the hundreds of obsolete and unwanted items that the Bainbridge Island School District will unload in the coming weeks as surplus items.

The Bainbridge Island School Board was expected to approve a long list of no-longer-needed school gear as surplus items at the board’s meeting this week.

The three-page list of surplus stuff includes a few oddities, as well as everyday classroom items. There are hundreds of chairs, 238 boxes of library book, another 114 boxes of textbooks, three school buses, and five ovens. Also on the list: four Shimpo pottery wheels, nine baseball bats, 37 stage lights, 21 Bessler photograph enlargers, and a wrestling mat.

After the school board signs off on the surplus list, the items will be sold, traded or thrown away. The district will notify private and public schools to see if there’s any interest in the district’s unwanted items — and Bainbridge students will also get a chance to buy surplus textbooks — before the rest of the unsold items go to the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services or made available for purchase to the general public.
