Bainbridge Island City Councilman Kol Medina won six of eight precincts to win last week’s Primary Election battle for the North Ward, District 2 council position, according to unofficial precinct results.

Medina, who is also currently serving as Bainbridge’s council-appointed mayor, continued to lead in the last updated vote count, held Thursday, Aug. 8.

In that tally, Medina had locked up 51.2 percent of the vote (1,008 votes). Challenger Kevin Fetterly collected 41.7 percent (821 votes).

Also on the ballot put to North Ward voters — Ashley Mathews, who dropped out of the race earlier but still collected 6.3 percent (125 votes) in Thursday’s updated count.

Mathews did not withdraw in time to have her name removed from the ballot. Under Washington state’s Top 2 Primary, the two candidates with the most votes — for the North Ward, that’s Medina and Fetterly — will advance to November’s General Election.

A total of 1,968 ballots have been counted so far. According to the Kitsap County Elections Division, 14 voters in the North Ward submitted ballots with write-in candidates.

Medina picked up his strongest support in the precincts of Lovgren and Seabold, according to an analysis of unofficial precinct returns conducted by the Review.

Medina earned 58 percent of the vote in Lovgren, and 56.9 percent of all ballots cast in Seabold.

Though Medina won six of eight North Ward precincts during the Primary Election, he was stopped just short of a majority win in the precinct of Skiff Point, where unofficial results had him with 49 percent of ballots cast. (In Skiff Point, Medina had 125 votes to Fetterly’s 111. Fetterly finished with 42.7 percent of the vote.)

That said, Medina did better than his overall finish in the North Ward of 51.2 percent in five of the ward’s eight precincts (Lovgren, 58 percent; Seabold, 56.9 percent; Rolling Bay, 54.4 percent; Meadowmeer, 52.2 percent; and Torvanger, 51.9 percent).

Fetterly won two precincts; Manzanita and Port Madison.

In Manzanita, Fetterly won with 50.9 percent of the vote, or 106 votes to Medina’s 89. (Medina was at 43.5 percent in the unofficial tally.)

In Port Madison, Fetterly outpaced Medina by 14 votes overall to win the precinct with 49.1 percent of the vote. The latest ballot count was 122 votes for Fetterly, and 108 for Medina (43.5 percent).

Medina also won the four precincts in the North Ward that have the largest voter populations in last week’s primary; Torvanger, Rolling Bay, Seabold and Skiff Point.

Medina’s worst numbers came in Manzanita, with 43.5 percent of 208 ballots cast.

Fetterly’s basement was in Lovgren, where he got 31.7 percent of 167 ballots cast.

Unlike the Aug. 6 primary, voters across the entire island will cast ballots in November’s General Election for council positions.

Four positions on the seven-member council will be on the Bainbridge ballot in November.

In addition to Medina, two other incumbents are hoping to retain a seat on the council.

Councilwoman Leslie A. Schneider, who was appointed to the District 4,

Central Ward seat in April 2018, is running against Grayson William Wildsmith.

Incumbent Councilwoman Sarah Blossom is running for a third term as the District 6, South Ward council member. Michael Pollock, currently a commissioner for the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District, is also seeking the seat.

Two candidates are vying for the District 1, at-large seat; Anthony Oddo and Kirsten Hytopoulos.
