Writers of all skill levels are invited to hear author Nisi Shawl on “Your Diverse Futures: Writing Inclusive Science Fiction” at the Feb. 19 Writers’ Monthly Roundtable.

The roundtable, sponsored by Field’s End, will be held at the Bainbridge Public Library.

Using examples from her own and others’ work, Shawl will talk about how representing the world’s diversity in imaginative fiction makes flights of fancy more believable as well as more accessible to a wider audience. She will explain what is gained through this strategy, and which tactics are potentially powerful, ambivalent or a total failure when it comes to getting everyone involved in a speculative fiction story.

Shawl’s story collection “Filter House” won the 2009 James Tiptree, Jr. Award.

Recently her stories have appeared in Strange Horizons and Crossed Genres. In 2011, she was WisCon 35’s Guest of Honor.

Shawl is a founding member of the Carl Brandon Society and serves on the board of directors of the Clarion West Writers Workshop. She co-authored “Writing the Other: A Practical Approach” with Cynthia Ward, a piece that helps writers create believable characters whose race, gender and other demographics differ from their own.

Field’s End monthly roundtables at the library are free. The evening includes a question-and-answer period and closes with an opportunity to network with other writers. No registration is required.
