Bainbridge Island police are investigating a case of animal cruelty after a goose near Fay Bainbridge Park was found with an arrow still stuck in the bird.

A resident of Point Monroe called 911 just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 after seeing the injured animal.

According to a Bainbridge Island police report on the incident, state Fish & Wildlife officers would not respond to the incident because it occurred at night. The resident also tried to contact the West Sound Wildlife Shelter, but the shelter was also closed.

The call by the Point Monroe resident was the second one made to 911 dispatchers Tuesday; CENCOM also received a report from another concerned person just before noon.

When a Bainbridge officer called the woman who reported the injured goose, she told police she saw it at the end of the Point Monroe Spit, and that the arrow was still stuck in the bird. The goose was only able to fly about 10 feet in the air before it had to land again. The woman said she believed the arrow was shot by someone on Bainbridge, so it should be investigated by island police.

Police said they would follow up on the case the following day, and the woman offered to pay the costs of rehabilitation for the goose if none were available.
