Bainbridge to look at council salaries

Bainbridge Island will reform the city’s salary commission.

The commission — which sets compensation levels for elected officials — has not been active since 2011, and the city hasn’t reviewed the salaries for elected officials since 2009.

Bainbridge councilmembers are paid $1,000 per month, while the council-appointed mayor earns $1,250 per month.

The city will advertise for applicants to serve on the commission in September, and councilmembers are expected to interview candidates and make appointments in October.

City officials are suggesting that the salaries of elected officials be reviewed periodically. In the future, the commission would be re-established every seven years.

If council salaries are eventually increased, under state law, the changes in compensation won’t affect the pay of current councilmembers.
