Best Bets for Sept. 20-22 | The Bainbridge Blab

Things are both electric and acoustic this weekend round the Rock, people. So get set for your weekly dose of freedom.

Wondering how to spend it? Here are our Best Bets.

Special advisory note up front: U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, as well as other state and local agencies, are scheduled to hold an active shooter drill at the Washington State Ferries Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday.

Do not be alarmed — it’s only a drill.

Nearby residents and community members around the facility and surrounding waterway should expect a large number of first responders, equipment, sirens and simulated gunfire.

This is a test of staff and equipment and will not pose a threat to the public, Coast Guard officials said in a recent announcement warning of the drill.

Now, on to the fun stuff!

The Spartans are set to take on the visitors from Interlake at 7 p.m. Friday in Bainbridge High School Memorial Stadium. It’s the varsity football squad’s third outing of the season, and they’re looking to up their overall record to 2-1.

People interested in electric vehicles will have a new outlet for learning about environmentally-friendly transportation.

The Drive Electric Kitsap Fair is planned Saturday and will give local residents the chance to learn about electric vehicles of all kinds.

The fair will begin at 10 a.m. with presentations at Bainbridge Island Fire Station 21 on Madison Avenue.

At 11:15 a.m., the event will continue until mid-afternoon across the street at the parking lot of the First Baptist Church at 8810 Madison Ave. NE and Highway 305. Participants can view electric cars, bikes, scooters, motorcycles, and a Kitsap Transit electric bus.

Attendees can also take short test-drives in some electric cars.

The free community fair is open to all Kitsap County and Olympic Peninsula residents. Ranger & the Re-Arrangers will provide music from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and snacks and lunch may be available for purchase from visiting food trucks.

Later, get ready to laugh.

Comedian Taylor Williamson will headline a one-night-only comedy show at Bainbridge Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, featuring special guest Dan Rosenberg.

Williamson is known for being runner-up in the 2013 season of “America’s Got Talent”, and his appearance on “Last Comic Standing” (in 2010), as well as “Taylor Williamson: Please Like Me” (2017).

He has been seen on The Late Late Show, Comedy Central, and MTV.

Tickets, $25 per person, may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206-842-8569 or in person at BPA (200 Madison Ave. North)

Also happening Saturday, over in Lynwood, Supertramp lead Guitarist Carl Verheyen returns — accompanied by the amazing band he had last year — for a night of acoustic blues at the Treehouse Café at 8 p.m.

Tickets, $35 for reserved table seating, are on sale now via www.treehousebainbridge.com; admission is 21-and-older only.

Recognized as “One of the World’s Top 10 Guitarists” by Guitar Magazine and “One of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time” by Classic Rock magazine, Verheyen brings a stunning mix of blues, rock, jazz and even country to the Treehouse, accompanied by world-class musicians John Mader on drums and Dave Marotta on bass.

Finally, it’s that time of year again, farm fans!

The 18th annual Bainbridge Island Harvest Fair, hosted by Friends of the Farms, will return to Johnson Farm from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Festivities will go on rain or shine — much like farm work.

The beloved island tradition has for nearly two decades now seen several thousand visitors gather at Johnson Farm (at the intersection of Fletcher Bay Road NE and NE Twin Ponds Road) to enjoy a cornucopia of autumnal offerings, including cider pressing, horse-drawn carriage rides and a sheep-shearing demonstration.

Admission is $10 per person, which includes access to all rides, though those younger than 2 get in free. Also, there will be a special discounted rate ($8 per person) for anyone arriving by bike.

The day-long celebration of the local farming community will also include square dancing, 4-H animal displays, and live music, as well as a beer-and-wine garden.

Delicious local food will available from several vendors, or guests can pack a picnic, spread a blanket and enjoy the day on 15-acres of prized public farmland.
