“Plays as funny and moving, as wonderful and weird as ‘The Realistic Joneses’ by Will Eno do not appear often on Broadway.

“Or ever, really.”

So said The New York Times. And that wonderful, weird play will be read, courtesy of Island Theatre, at the Bainbridge Public Library at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8.

Admission is free, though donations are appreciated.

In “The Realistic Joneses,” audiences meet Bob and Jennifer and John and Pony, new neighbors with identical homes and the same last name. As the couples interact — in a series of short, often hilarious vignettes — they find they have even more in common than at first appeared.

Jeff Brown chose this play for Island Theatre because he said he was “intrigued by the exploration of relationship— both within and outside marriage. Both couples are wrestling with intimacy and commitment, as well as with their hopes for individual recognition and affirmation.

“When the couples meet, sparks fly in unexpected ways.”

“The Realistic Joneses” is directed by Brown, and features Steve Stolee, Jackie O’Brien, Terace Yeatts and Evan Lenz.

It is recommended for high school ages and up.

Island Theatre “provides high-quality theater in intimate settings for adults who like to think.”

Their regular schedule includes bi-monthly staged play readings at the Bainbridge Public Library; potluck play-readings in private homes at which guests are welcome to read a part; and the annual Island Theatre Ten Minute Play Festival.
