Bainbridge Performing Arts’ much-praised production of “Matilda the Musical” remains sold out, but all is not bleak round the Rock this weekend for festive fun seekers.
If you’ve finished your holiday shopping and are done decking the halls (or just need a break) consider instead these choice choices, our Best Bets …
On screen at the historic Lynwood Theatre for a final a final three-day run is the fascinating documentary “Fantastic Fungi.”
At just 81 minutes long, the film explores the magical world of fungi — that strange category of creature that is neither animal nor vegetable, but similar to both — and its uses in human health treatments – both mental and physical – and their power to heal, sustain and contribute to the regeneration of life on Earth.
It stars primarily renowned mycologist Paul Stamets, among an impressive roster of other experts, in a doc The New York Times called “informative and kooky,” which offers, “nothing less than a model for planetary survival.”
Personally, I agree with the Times’ Jeannette Catsoulis, in that I too “could have done without Brie Larson’s cutesy narration,” but otherwise this is a fun and informative flick that wows with BBC-worthy photography and Ken Burns-type insights. And, with such a comparatively short runtime, it doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Show times are 2, 4:15 and 6:30 p.m.
