Mixed night for BHS varsity wrestlers in Seattle

Win one, lose one.

That’s how it was for the Bainbridge High School varsity wrestling squad Dec. 12, when they came away with a win and loss at a doubleheader match at Garfield High School.

The Spartans lost to the host school 40-34, but claimed a 24-22 win against Franklin.

Against Garfield, there were six forfeit wins total, including one double forfeit in the 220-pound bracket.

BHS’ Katherine Irvin claimed a 24-second win in the 160-pound match.

Spartan co-captain Ben Dunscombe took down Elek Thomas-Toth in 1:18 for a win in the 170-pound bracket.

Wyatt Goad earned a 14-6 decision win in the 195-pound bracket against GHS’ Ricardo Conteras.

Harrison Cate was bested 10-0 by Garfield’s Quinten Flight (120 pounds).

Levi Field-Bennett fought to a rapid-fire 19-second win against Garfield’s Satchel Stephenson (126 pounds).

BHS’ Victoria Hutt claimed a 1-minute win in the 132-pound bracket.

In the 138-pound match, BHS’ Christopher Longridge pinned his opponent in 31 seconds.

Garfield’s Daniel Johnston took down Beck Gibson in 5:58 for a win in the 145-pound match.

Two of Bainbridge’s slim squad of female wrestlers did take home wins in exhibition matches as well: Aubrie Ackland earned a 16-1 decision (152 pounds) and Caroline Michaels took down her opponent in 1:29 (160 pounds).

Against Franklin there were six forfeit wins total, five of them double forfeits.

Ren Paras took down Irvin in 15 seconds in the 160-pound bracket.

Goad received a bye in the 195-pound match.

Phat Tat took down Cate in 1:16 in the 120-pound match.

Field-Bennett got a bye in the 126-pound bracket, as did Hutt (132 pounds) and Longridge (138).

In the 145-pound match, Danny Nguyen claimed an 8-0 victory over BHS’ Beck Gibson.

The Spartans will travel to the Kitsap Pavilion for the annual Hammerhead Invitational Saturday, Dec. 21, next returning home to host the yearly Island Invitational Saturday, Jan. 11.
