Board approves contract for Bainbridge fire chief

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department has inked a new contract for Fire Chief Hank Teran.

The board of commissioners for the fire department recently approved an updated employment agreement with Teran, and the new contract will run through Dec. 31, 2024.

The board of commissioners last approved a contract renewal for the chief in December 2016. That five-year agreement was set to run through February 2022.

The new agreement extends the contract term for another two years.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be a member of the community as a fire chief since 2007,” Teran said. “And I consider it an honor and privilege to continue to serve the community and the men and women of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.”

“It’s fantastic to have the support of the board of the fire commission and to make the offer to continue to be the fire chief,” he added.

Teran’s base pay has been set at $177,126 per year. The previous contract put his base salary at $165,670 per year.

Commissioners approved the deal at their last meeting in November. The contract agreement was not on the agenda, but was introduced at the end of the Nov. 20 meeting, after a closed-door executive session called for “review the performance of a public employee” that stretched nearly two hours.
