The city of Bainbridge Island is expected to issue a “Proclamation of Local Emergency” Monday following the first confirmed case of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Kitsap County.
Officials with the Kitsap Public Health District announced Sunday that a Bainbridge Island resident has tested positive for COVID-19 — the first person in Kitsap County to be found to have the virus.
Bainbridge spokeswoman Kristen Drew said early Monday there were no immediate changes to city operations.
“The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains on standby, which means Emergency Management Coordinator Anne LeSage and city leadership continue to monitor the situation and work with community partners,” Drew said in an email to the Review.
“The need to have a full EOC activation will be determined by resource requests from local clinics, health care providers and other community partners,” she added.
Officials with the Kitsap Public Health District said the test from the Bainbridge resident, a person in their 60s, was a “presumptive positive.” The test results, which were reported by the University of Washington, are pending confirmation from the Washington State Department of Health.
Through Sunday, 14 Kitsap County residents has test results that were submitted to the state public health lab in Shoreline, and seven have had negative results.
Test results for five others sent to the University of Washington have also come back negative.
The person on Bainbridge with COVID-19 is in isolation and receiving care, health officials said.
The positive test was reported by the University of Washington. The case is classified as a “presumptive positive” until the test can be confirmed by the state public health laboratory.
A total of 18 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in Washington state. Seventeen deaths have been reported in King County, and one in Snohomish County.
Seven counties have reported confirmed novel coronavirus cases: Clark, Grant, Jefferson, King, Kittitas, Pierce and Snohomish.
Officials with the Bainbridge Island School District said schools would remain open.
