Wednesday’s march on Bainbridge Island City Hall by islanders unhappy with the city’s update of its Shoreline Master Program has been canceled, organizers announced in an email Tuesday.

The Bainbridge Defense Fund, the property rights group headed by email activist Gary Tripp, said the demonstration would not go forward as planned.

“The Steering Committee has decided to cancel the march because:

1. the weather is going to be iffy;

2. there will be no public testimony taken at the city council meeting; and,

3. the portion of the meeting dealing with the SMP does not start until 8:25 p.m.”

“We just couldn’t see standing around from 6:30 to 8:25 with nothing to do and then not being able to speak,” the email said.

In Tuesday’s email, the committee also said people should still attend this week’s council meeting to listen to the council’s deliberations on the Shoreline Master Program, and to continue sending emails to city council members to ask for changes and a delay in the adoption of the plan.

The city council will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 15. The meeting starts with a closed-door executive session and the council will open the meeting to the public at 7 p.m.

The council will consider a resolution adopting the updated SMP at 8:25 p.m., according to the council agenda for the meeting.
