Kiosk opens

The Ferry Terminal Visitor Information Kiosk in Winslow will open May 27 just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The recently renovated facility will be manned by Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce Island Ambassadors. It will remain open daily all summer until after Labor Day weekend.

Chamber members are reminded to drop off their business flyers at the kiosk for display.

The chamber office, which includes Department of Licensing, Visitor Information and Fish and Wildlife, also is being remodeled.

Trailer’s flight

A trailer that will sell Pegasus Coffee this summer at The Orchard’s garden plaza at 345 Knechtel Way was put in place by a large crane last week.

The 1950s Boles Aero Trailer has been used for public festivals and private parties, serving espresso and drip coffees, along with scratch-made pastries, plus teas, sodas, snacks and more.

The European-style coffee shop’s permanent building is near the waterfront in an ivy-covered 1937 historic building at 131 Parfitt Wauy on Bainbridge Island. It’s been roasted there since 1980.

Distillers win

Bainbridge Organic Distillers has won another competition.

Keith Barnes and his team’s Yama Mizunara Cask Single Grain Whiskey took Double Gold in the Single Grain category at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition this month. Earlier this year it won Best American Grain at the World Whiskies Awards.

Bainbridge Yama starts its life as organic Alba and Full Pint organic barley grown in Skagit Valley, and after mashing, fermenting and distillation in Bainbridge Island completes its journey aging in small Japanese Mizunara Oak casks from Hokkaido, Japan. It delivers bright aromatics of mango, vanilla, toasted sandalwood, tropical flowers, marzipan and star anise. Flavors open on nutmeg and clove, pear and toasty wood notes, settling out to honeyed vanilla and toasted marshmallow. Finish is warm and lingering with fading spice and a pleasant oak grip.

Bank closed

The Bank of America Financial Center on Bainbridge Island has been temporarily closed.

Customers are advised to visit one of the bank’s nearby branches such as Poulsbo or to utilize online and mobile banking.

“Our temporary financial center closures have occurred in areas where we’re seeing fewer visits; where a smaller location may be close to a larger location that is better able to accommodate physical distancing; or when our staffing is not sufficient for all to remain open. When a center closes we work to reopen it as soon as possible,” Media Relations manager Britney Sheehan said in a news release.

“When appropriate, employees working at a temporarily closed financial center may be moved to a nearby center to help serve clients, as is the case here. Clients who need access to their safe deposit box at any of the temporarily closed locations can schedule an appointment online.”

The reopening date for the Bainbridge branch is unknown at this time.

Scholarship win

For the fifth consecutive year, Wesleyan University has awarded its prestigious Hamilton Prize for Creativity to three students whose creative written works best reflect the originality, artistry, and dynamism of Hamilton: An American Musical, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda ’02, Hon. ’15 and directed by Thomas Kail ’99.

Audrey Nelson of Bainbridge Island was awarded the grand prize—a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to attend Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT for a work of prose she authored called “Complications.”

“Audrey’s ‘Complications’ was delightful and surprising at every turn: in structure, in subject matter, in its evocative language,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda. “I wanted to read more from this writer immediately.”

Nelson, a high school senior, won Wesleyan’s Hamilton Prize for Creativity. For the fifth year, Wesleyan has honored student for creative written works that best reflect the originality, artistry and dynamism of “Hamilton: An American Musical,” created by Miranda.

Tennis unbeaten

The Bainbridge High School tennis team is unbeaten at 7-0.

The Spartans are in first place in the Olympic League with a 7-0 record.

In a recent contest BHS beat Central Kitsap 6-1.

Road concerns?

Concerned about speed in your neighborhood?

Let the city of Bainbridge Island know as it’s seeking project ideas that will improve conditions for people walking, biking or rolling in neighborhoods. These safety enhancements, known as “traffic calming” projects, may include physical designs or radar speed signs on existing roads to reduce vehicle speeds. There’s an interactive web tool that allows you to pinpoint the areas. Proposals may be submitted through July 16.

There will be public engagement opportunities in June on four specific areas: Grow Avenue (between Winslow Way and High School Road); Schel Chelb pedestrian crossing (Point White Drive); Grand Forest pedestrian crossing (Miller Road); and Finch corridor intersections (Wyatt Way to High School Road)

Free pass

The state Parks and Recreation Commission announces Juneteenth will now be a Discover Pass free day.

There are three other free days in June. In recognition of National Trails Day on the 5th; In honor of National Get Outdoors Day on the 12th; and for Free Fishing Weekend on the 13th. (June 12-13 is Free Fishing Weekend.)

June 19 honors one of the most important days in Black American history. On Juneteenth, 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the enslaved people of Texas. This was the last state to have the proclamation read aloud. Though President Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation Jan. 1, 1863, slavery continued in Texas for two and a half years.

In April, the state Legislature passed a bill making Juneteenth a paid holiday for state workers beginning in 2022.

On the four days visitors will not need to display a Discover Pass for day-use parking at state parks and on recreation lands managed by the state Department of Natural Resources and state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
