A man tried to steal an ATM at Fletcher Bay Mart in Bainbridge Island Wednesday, and police are asking for help to find him.
Around 2:40 a.m., a BI officer saw a U-Haul truck in front of the closed business at 8800 Fletcher Bay Road. When the officer pulled into the parking lot, the U-Haul took off.
The officer found the front door of the market smashed and a tow strap tied to the ATM inside the store.
The officer attempted to stop the truck on High School Road but the driver accelerated to more than 50 miles per hour. In accordance with a BIPD policy in effect since October 2015, the officer did not pursue the vehicle . Additional agencies saw the vehicle as it traveled through Kitsap County, but the driver refused to stop.
The vehicle was last seen traveling east on Highway 16 in Gorst. Detectives learned that the vehicle had been stolen from a business in Tacoma just hours earlier.
During the burglary, the man wore a mask, hood, dark clothing and gloves. Police posted two surveillance videos of the incident on the BIPD Facebook page. If you have any information, call detective Jon Ledbetter at 206-842-5211.
