BHS girls dominate district meet in pool

7 of 14 going to state are freshmen

The freshman-dominated Bainbridge High School Girls Swim and Dive team dominated the West Central District 3 Class 3A championships Friday and Saturday, ending the season undefeated.

The Spartans tallied 450 points, while second-place Stadium had 165 in the 17-team field.

BHS is sending two divers and 12 swimmers, including seven freshmen, to state Nov. 12-13 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. They include seniors Margaret Hayes, Siena Levan and Bryn Tiernan; junior Emma Solseng; sophmores Elyse Lipton, Kathryn Houseman and Uma Pal; and freshmen Alexa McDevitt, Sophie Segerson, Sammy Segerson, Piper Majors, Tierney Lenahan, Maya Geddes and Sara Kriegh

”This is a very special team. The depth and talent is unprecedented. These girls give their heart and soul to swimming and diving and have trained so hard all season,” coach Kristine Cox said.

Highlighting the event, besides winning every event but one, was the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lenahan, Majors, Sammy Segerson and McDevitt breaking a school record with a time of 3 minutes, 33.86 seconds.

Lenahan, McDevitt Sonseng and Hayes won the 200 medley relay in 1:47.52.

McDevitt won the 200 free in 1:54.02 while Houseman won the 200 individual medley in 2:05.14.

Solseng sprinted to a win in the 50 free in 24.6 seconds, while Lipton won the 1-meter diving competition with 292.15 points.

Hayes took another first-place title in the 100 butterfly in 56.18 seconds while Lenahan won both the 100 free in 53.10 seconds and the 100 back in 56.53 seconds.

McDevitt took her second first-place title in the 500 free in 5:04.62, while winning the 200-free relay in 1:38.15 were Solseng, Majors, Houseman and Hayes.

In the only other event, Sophie Segerson led BHS with a second-place finish in the 100 breastroke in 1:05.11.
