After 100 years, BI Review still No. 1

The Bainbridge Island Review continues to celebrate its 100th anniversary year—and its victory in the General Excellence category at the recent Washington Newspaper Publisher Association convention shows it’s as good as ever.

“This newspaper excels in creating a strong sense of place, immersing readers in the local community,” judges’ comments say. “The exceptional use of photos and art brings the stories to life. The advertising is a good mix—effective and eye catching.”

The Review was the only newspaper of the 43 owned by Sound Publishing that took first in General Excellence, although five others placed second or third. The Review staff also took third place for its website.

Individually, Molly Hetherwick led the way with a first place in History Feature for her story on the Indipiino Community. She also won two other awards.

Editor Steve Powell took a first for Arts Feature for “Swifties shake it off, get Taylor tickets.” He also took a third in Investigative Reporting for his series on “The Cost of Public Records.” He won another third-place award, too.

Former staff Nancy Treder took a first for Online Photo Essay; former sports writer Nicholas Zeller-Zingh took a first for Sports Feature and two other awards; freelancer Damon Williams won an award for Portrait Photo; and freelancer Tom Tyner won an award for columns.

In advertising, Brenda Jorgens, Tracy Long and Han Bui won four first-place awards for Humorous, Youth-oriented, Clip Art and Ad half page or larger. They also won five other awards.

Highlighting the news awards for the North Kitsap Herald was a first-place finish in Comprehensive Coverage with the mix of stories on the resignation of the superintendent of the North Kitsap School District with Hetherwick, Tyler Shuey and Elisha Meyer. Hetherwick also took second in breaking news for the superintendent being a suspect in political sign thefts. Shuey won two other awards.

Meyer led the way with four first-place finishes for the Port Orchard Independent. Freelancer Mike De Felice also had four firsts. Meyer won two other awards.
