New practice for island doctor
Dr. Jared Hendler, who has been providing medical care on the island for nearly 30 years, is now operating under the Direct Patient-Provider Care plan.
Since January, his practice servces patients without involvement in the insurance system, he said. The plan, approved by the State Legislature, allows patients to pay the physician directly.
For a monthly fixed fee, patients can receive 30-to-60-minute office visits, onside x-ray and limited laboratory services, minor surgery and other primary and preventive care services.
Checks no longer accepted by WSF
Starting last Wednesday, State Ferries stopped accepting checks to pay for fares. It’s cash or debt/credit cards only from now on.
WSF said checks amounted to 4.5 percent of all payments collected by the ferry system last year. Check processing cost WSF $50,000.
In addition, WSF will eliminate selling discounted, single round-trip fares that require proof of eligibility (seniors, youth and disabled) from kiosks and its website. Those tickets can be purchased only at toll booths.
