“Heart of a Dog,” Frank Galati’s modern adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s classic Soviet comedy, will visit Bainbridge Island for two free performances next month as part of a tour of libraries and theaters in Kitsap County.

The tour is Oct. 6 through Oct. 27, and is part of the Kitsap Regional Library’s annual One Book-One Community” program.

“Heart of a Dog” will be presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art and at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at Bainbridge Bakers (Winslow Green).

Written as a reaction to the socialist revolution, the production is a wonderfully witty 1920s Russian comedy designed and directed by Steve Stolee and Fred Saas and features a troupe of players performing in a commedia dell’arte-inspired spectacle.

The cast includes Fred Nicholson, Jonathan Hibbs, Diane Walker, David Mcgee, Pat Scott, Tracy Dickerson, Rilla Hughes and Audrey Barbakoff.

In the story, a Moscow medical rejuvenation specialist has made a successful career of restoring sexual prowess to an aging bourgeoisie. One evening, with aspirations of scientific greatness, the professor lures home a stray dog to be his latest test subject.

The dog, like the proletariat, will put up with anything as long as his stomach is full.

Then one day, the professor transplants human testes and a pituitary gland into Sharik, the dog, who sheds his hair and tail and becomes Sharikov, the human, with a new taste for vodka, womanizing and politics.

Due to the adult concepts and content of the play, it is considered PG-13.

The tour will follow the pattern set in 2006 with the Island Theatre production of “An Enemy of the People” and play at several Kitsap library branches. Shows will kick off in Bremerton and follow in at the Manchester, Poulsbo and Bremerton libraries before coming to Bainbridge and then wrapping up in Port Orchard and Silverdale.

Admission is free, but donations will be welcome, at all venues.

Founded on Bainbridge Island in 1995, Island Theatre’s regular schedule includes bi-monthly staged play readings at the Bainbridge Public Library plus, in intervening months, potluck dinners in privately hosted homes at which all guests are welcome to join in a selected play reading.
