Despite myriad awards and critical praise, there was always something missing from 1999’s “The Iron Giant.”
Reportedly, the production, helmed by first-time director Brad Bird — who would go on to direct “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” — ran into some problems toward the end and several scenes had to be cut.
Now, Warner Animation Group has completed a new version of the film, a “Signature Edition,” which will play only at select theaters around the country, including Bainbridge Cinemas, this week.
Set during the Cold War, the film is about a young boy named Hogarth Hughes who discovers a giant metallic robot who fell from space. With the help of a beatnik artist named Dean McCoppin, he has to stop the U.S. military and a federal agent named Kent Mansley from finding and destroying the Giant.
The film starred Christopher McDonald, Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr., John Mahoney and Vin Diesel and featured a unique mash-up of both traditional animation techniques and computer graphics.
This newly completed version of “The Iron Giant” will come to Bainbridge Cinemas at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. Tickets for this one-time-only screening are on sale; the cost is $12.50.
