As we enter the election cycle once again, it seems appropriate to evaluate the criteria that should be used to help us judge the qualifications of the candidates.
We see many letters stating the opinion of the writer. What we don’t see enough of, and should be looking for, are letters demonstrating accomplishments of the candidates in the private and public arena.
If a councilperson is going to be effective in office, then that person should be able to point to specific instances (preferably several) that demonstrate leadership ability and success in achieving measurable goals.
Kirsten Hytopoulos fits these qualifications. She created Green Voices, an online forum on island community issues. She is co-moderator and a frequent contributor to IslandMoms.
She has spoken in front of council and the planning commission on several issues over the years – fiscal responsibility, preserving downtown character, building heights, tree preservation, and the importance of water resources.
My own knowledge of Kirsten, and the reason that I wholeheartedly endorse her candidacy, is the result of having served together on the successful campaign to change our form of government from a mayor to a city manager.
In our committee meetings, I found Kirsten to be well informed on the issues and a strong and effective advocate for her positions.
Most importantly, I was impressed with her willingness to adopt the position of the committee and work hard for our goals once consensus was achieved.
This is what effective government is about.
