It is with deep appreciation that we thank the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council and Dinah Satterwhite for hosting the annual student art contest last weekend at the Pavilion.

It was wonderful to see the extraordinary talent of our island’s children, and be witness to and participate in the awards presentation, where the originality and creativity of the many artists in the show, including that of our own daughter, were honored. Having won “Best of Show,” she is thrilled to have received the award.

While both academic and sports achievements are so publicly acknowledged on an ongoing basis, it is great to also have an occasion or two like this one, a place and dedicated moment where children can also be recognized for their distinct and essential way, an artistic way, of connecting with the world.

With over 200 entries submitted, one wants to acknowledge the courage and willingness of these young artists to place what came from their hearts, minds, and spirits, in the public eye. What a gift they have given us!

An event where creativity is honored and recognized by other artists, goes a long way in nourishing a young adult’s confidence and self esteem. Such moments like these can be defining.
