The idea of creating a new art museum to highlight local and regional art, at first pass, seemed overly ambitious.

But I’ve gone from admiring skeptic to enthusiasting supporter after sitting in on a focus group which discussed the mission of the museum and the role it might play in the community, and then attending the open house where architect Matthew Coates presented 10 different design possibilities for the museum.

Clearly, the drivers of this project are listening to the people they intend to serve. I was impressed when the crowds thinned out at the open house, and I saw a museum board member collect a couple of abandoned comment cards and put them in the ballot box, because there may be some great ideas here, we don’t want to miss anything.

The designs presented were beautiful, exciting possibilities, which the public was invited to comment on, adding suggestions or just observations regarding aesthetics and functional considerations.

The seriousness and joy with which attendees completed the comment cards, and the seriousness of the board in listening, reveals a level of caring and desire to get it right which bodes well for this future island jewel.

The potential for what this museum can do for Bainbridge both economically and culturally is huge. I’d like to thank the board of the Bainbridge Art Museum for embracing public input as this project moves forward.
