Over the holidays I have reflected many times on the past year and the world we are heading into 2009. At times, the challenges we have as a country and community appear overwhelming. What can I do? No matter how many times I consider solutions to complex problems, the more I realize that simple changes can have enormous impacts.
In this spirit, I share two smal actions we can take to be a part of positive differences for Earth and the community that we cherish.
Use less plastic: When purchasing groceries consider buying products with biodegradable wrapping or bring your own bags for fruits and vegetables rather than use the plastic bags. One way I have a found that can significantly reduce plastic consumption is asking for butcher paper (instead of plastic bags the store provides) for deli items such as cheese and lunch meats. I do it all the time and am accommodated every time. Even the roasted chickens can be placed in paper bags instead of plastic containers. Paper disintegrates in the environment or can be recycled whereas plastic is mostly forever.
Helpline House donations: As difficult economic times continue, more people are relying on this resource to make ends meet. When you are shopping, purchase one (just one) extra canned good, jar of peanut butter, etc. While one extra item may not be a huge burden for you, it can make the world of difference to those in need. If even half of Banbridge’s people bought one more item to donate, what a huge impact that would make to families in need.
It is with great hope and promise in my heart that I wish you a very healthy and peaceful New Year.
