I do not understand how our council can in one breath state that the difficult decisions have put our city’s finances in order, with cuts saving up $5 million; and then in the next breath, state that we don’t have the $1.2 million in funds needed to fix our roads.
Excuse my confusion, but it sure seems like we do have those funds, without any new bond offer or tax increase. Or is that rainy day fund solely for legal expenses enforcing shoreline rules, wine-making ordinances, holiday decorations for Winslow Way, or other efforts far higher in importance than a usable road system?
Or perhaps the prime use of those savings is the circular logic of improving the city’s credit rating, allowing for a lower interest rate when borrowing funds via bond offerings, to spend on programs which were cut in order to create the pool of savings?
Council, please save us all the time and expense of voting on a bond offer, of reading and writing letters like this, and for once and henceforth fund the line item in the budget that says “road repairs.”
