I am an island resident of 10 years, and a dog owner. This letter is directed toward dog owners who do not abide by the law, and show disregard for other islanders. I am sick and tired of dogs being let off-leash in Bainbridge public parks and on public trails.

On Dec. 13, my boys and I were having a nice time running around at Battle Point Park. Suddenly, my 3-year-old son was charged by an unleashed, snarling, barking, golden retriever that was three times his size. The dog charged to within 10 feet of my son, who was stationary and hysterical.

In the few seconds it took me to run to him, the dog had stopped its aggressive behavior after the owner repeatedly yelled commands. My son is still deeply affected to the degree that he now shows a new fear of our family dog.

It doesn’t matter how friendly you think your dog is… letting them run off-leash in a public place is against the law, and inconsiderate to others.

The aforementioned incident is the worst, but it is one of many similar situations we have experienced at Battle Point, Peter’s Trail, Lytle Beach, Crystal Springs, Gazzam Lake trail, etc.

Dog owners, please abide by the law (civil code 6.04.030) and exercise basic consideration toward your fellow citizens. Saying “Sorry” or “Oh, he’s friendly” just doesn’t cut it. If you need to let your dog run at large, take them to the off-leash dog run at Eagledale Park.
