To the editor:
In the Oct. 16 edition of the Bainbridge Review, statements by candidate Lynn Smith left the unfortunate impression that a large auditorium was necessary at the high school because the community needed a performing arts center.
While there is little doubt the high school needs a better space for student events (my three children were all active in music and theater at BHS and the LGI is woefully inadequate) the needs of the school district and the needs of the community should not be confused.
Our community has a performing arts center now. BPA has been inspiring, educating and entertaining islanders of all ages for 59 years. The existing playhouse was paid for with generous donations from the community and it has served a useful life.
In the same spirit the Bainbridge Performing Arts board, staff and volunteers are well along in planning for an expanded facility to address the community’s needs.
School board members should carefully consider what programs and purposes any new facility will serve before proposing such a large project rather than proceeding on enthusiastic assumptions.
