Port districts have accomplished many positive things usually related to the flow of goods and passengers into and out of a region. A good example is the Port of Seattle.
Seattle is a deepwater port. Its geographic relation to Alaska, Russia, and the Orient make it suited for port activity, trade, travel by air and sea.
None of this applies to Bainbridge Island. We are a bedroom community of Seattle. Our jobs come from Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Poulsbo, Silverdale and Bremerton.
One person complained about having to travel eight nautical miles to procure fuel and repairs for his boat. Poor boy.
The real reason for a port district for Bainbridge by honest admission of the port proponents is “… to do what the city can’t or won’t do.”
Our city “can’t” balance its books, “can’t” pay its bills because it overspends its budget or has not priotitized its needs and it wants. Ergo, let’s create a new taxing district and call it the Port of Bainbridge Island.
Vote “no” on the port district on Nov. 8.
