How quickly we forget. In 1994 we islanders approved becoming a city so we could control our own destiny. Home rule was the gold standard that people voted for.
It was said that we had talented and educated people on the island who could contribute to running our government.
Now, we have City Council candidates (and sitting council members) who want to give up on home rule and cede over vital functions (water, sewer, police, parks) of our city to other agencies.
What will be next? Courts? Planning? Personnel? Management? Then, just what will be the purpose of having a city in the first place. Let’s not give up so easily. Let’s employ some of our local talent to right the ship.
Read the candidates statements carefully. Don’t vote for any candidate who wants to go back to the bad old days and give up control of our own destiny.
