Even St. Regis, Mont., can teach us lessons | Letters | Sept. 25

St. Regis, Mont., is a small, rural village just off I-90 west of Missoula. Its population ranges from about 175 to 250, depending on a variety of factors. Last June 23, School District #1, Mineral County, Mont., held an election “to impose an increase in local taxes to support the general fund of the school district in the amount of $7,215.45 which is approximately 2.17 mills for the purpose of operation and maintenance.”

This would increase the taxes on a home with a market value of $200,000 approximately $8.62.

A week or so ago I called the school district to ascertain the outcome of the vote. Several citizens wished to question such a small amount – why not a nice, round $10,000? No, the school district maintained that $7,215.45 was enough to put the budget up to where it was last year. The levy passed with a huge majority.

With discussions on going about resubmitting a school bond without re-assessing the amounts needed, perhaps all of us, but especially the school board, should take a page from little School District #1. They only took what they absolutely needed.

Incidentally, St. Regis has an outstanding website. Take a look. I cannot imagine two areas less alike in every possible category. And yet, they live well, they educate well, and they are all rather frugal.
