I support Barry Peters’ call for the car tax. In fact, I think all vehicles using the road should participate, including adults riding bicycles or motorcycles – albeit at a lower level. Bainbridge shares the road, so we should share the load.
The taxes collected are legally dedicated to road repair and improvement, not only for motorized vehicles but also for bike paths and pedestrian paths. Anyone driving or walking on the island can see the need for all of the above. If the funds are not subverted, and if the present road funding is not reallocated for other use, this is a win for us all.
I dislike taxes just as much as the next person, but I support this one. In this case the tariff is very low – we can all afford $20 per year. And it’s one tax we will be able to see the results of, as all of the funds will be used right here and not shared with Kitsap County and the state.
These funds will not get rid of our patchwork roadways, but they will allow for the filling of potholes and for a little widening of roads so bikes and pedestrians can safely coexist with cars.
