Help yourself by helping other islanders | Letters | March 6

The news is depressing. Our country is in the midst of a global recession. We’re at war. Our city budgets are facing major axes. I don’t know about you, but I’ve quit watching the news. It’s too unnerving to watch things spinning out of control when you yourself want to grab control. But, of what?

So here’s something we can all do to feel a sense of control over our own existence and a sense of positivity in the middle of all this angst. We can help our community and in doing so help ourselves.

Take a few minutes, look through your pantry, put a bag or two together for Helpline House, put it in the backseat and next time you’re out running errands swing by their location and drop it off. You will be greeted with smiles, eternal gratitude, wonder at our generous community and you will feel great that you helped your own neighbors.

Or, the next time you’re grocery shopping, leave some items in the donation station by the door. You will take control in your own way by doing something positive in your own community..

My daughter and I stopped by Helpline House today to drop some things off and we could tell the shelves were low and the need was great.

We can help ourselves by helping each other. Think about it. And thank you for being a community we are proud to be members of.
