How to stop illegal parking? Call police | Letters | Jan. 22

In response to Ms. Burdick’s letter regarding the abuse of disabled parking spaces by selfish, piggish individuals, I will say that I will not hesitate to call 911 to report such abuse and request immediate towing and impounding of the violating vehicle.

Yes, 911 is for “life or death” situations but the police are clear that citizens should defer that assessment to them. Requiring a disabled person to park further away and negotiate a crowded parking lot with insensitive and inattentive drivers clearly meets the life-or-death test – disabled parking legislation was not for matters of convenience.

The cost to the offending parker will be far beyond the $250 fine and may help them adjust their attitude. If others will join me on this, the problem will be fixed in short order. And yes, this is rooted in self-interest because someday my disabled daughter will be facing this issue and I am going to fix this for her, and her peers, now because as Ms. Burdick points out it has gotten completely out of control.
