To the editor:
The pervasiveness of firearm-related deaths and injuries in America is cause for serious concern, and as a resident of Bainbridge Island, I am concerned about how this issue will impact our state.
As we increasingly see communities rally for change, we’re also learning that instances of gun violence are often preventable. That’s why I’m choosing to vote yes on Washington State Ballot Initiative 1639, “Safe Schools, Safe Communities.”
We need to take action to prevent gun violence before it happens, and there are concrete steps we can take. I-1639 includes measures such as enhanced background checks, a reasonable waiting period, and firearm safety training in order to purchase a semiautomatic rifle, which are all steps that promote responsible gun ownership and reduce risk. I believe our children, communities, and towns across Washington deserve this elevated level of safety.
The movement for gun safety is growing, and I know I am not alone in calling for support for I-1639. I urge readers to vote yes on I-1639 to encourage responsible gun ownership in Washington and keep our communities safe.
