To the editor:

Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers is deeply grateful to the many members of our community who gave open-hearted and abundant support to our recent fundraising auction-dinner, held Aug. 1 at Kiana Lodge.

More than 60 local businesses and individuals donated a wide range of goods, services and adventures for the auction. About 130 people attended the event, and contributed through bidding on these donations and in other ways. Additional contributions were made by many who could not attend, and by our very generous sponsors: Bainbridge Senior Living, Harrison Medical Center, the Suquamish Tribe, Peninsula Cancer Center, and Dr. Greg Keyes.

As a result, this was the most successful auction in Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers’ history, raising substantial funds for staff and other expenses necessary for carrying on IVC’s mission.

In that mission, volunteers in our community, now numbering about 150, reach out in kindness and compassion to many neighbors who are elderly, disabled or otherwise vulnerable, who need help to maintain their dignity, independence and quality of life.

The volunteers help in numerous ways, including transportation for health care appointments, shopping or other needs; help with household chores, gardening or minor repairs; reading to people who are visually impaired; delivering flowers; companionship through visits, walks, drives or other spirit-lifting activities; and respite care to relieve family caregivers. Also, IVC staff supports weekly caregiver and grief support groups for individuals in the community.

We thank all who made the event possible. We also express thanks to our faithful and dedicated volunteers. It is a joy to be part of such a caring community.
