To the editor:
My wife and I would like to lend our enthusiastic support for the upcoming capital bond measure to acquire the 23-acre Sakai property as a public park.
For eight years, from 1986 to 1993, I had the privilege of serving as a Bainbridge Island Park District Commissioner. One of our proudest acts was to sponsor a capital levy in 1991 to acquire the Grand Forest, and then later to support passage of a measure to acquire the park district’s Gazzam Lake property. At the time there were a few skeptics who questioned the expense of these measures, but we seriously doubt anybody would like to give back these island jewels for commercial development anytime soon.
We urge our neighbors, friends and even the few curmudgeons among us to support this wonderful opportunity, and then to participate in community-wide discussion on how to use the property to best suit our overall needs.
For the average islander, the annual cost of this bond amounts to literally the cost of a couple of movie tickets, drinks and popcorn. In exchange we can acquire and preserve a magnificent Bainbridge Island “Central Park” in perpetuity!
