To the editor:
I live on Eagle Harbor Drive and I’m convinced that someone is going to be killed on my street — a driver or a biker — for lack of a road shoulder. It’s why I’m voting for Proposition 1, the SAFE Mobility levy.
The road is winding and steep for two miles. Bikers have to slow down and cars are tempted to pass. The danger is, one of them will hit a biker or crash into an oncoming car.
My street, though, is hardly the only one made perilous by having no paved shoulder. The same applies to Fletcher Bay Road, Bucklin Hill Road, Blakely Avenue, Miller Road and Valley Road.
Opponents of the levy claim there is no plan for which roads to shoulder, but City Council Resolution 2018-21 clearly lists these six and also specifies which approaches to schools will be made safer and trails worked on.
The exact order of the work will be decided after citizen input from an advisory committee that I plan to volunteer for.
To save a life (or prevent a serious injury) I urge everyone to support Prop. 1.
