Police experience reveals what officers go through | Letters | April 22

I recently had the good fortune of participating in the 2011 Bainbridge Island Citizen Police academy. Myself and 20 other participants were given the opportunity over eight weeks to broaden our knowledge of the many responsibilities of our local police through classes, seminars and field trips.  Defensive tactics, crime scene investigation and narcotics were just a few of the subjects we explored, and it was a very informative, eye-opening experience. The entire course was professionally presented – it was obvious that care, time and effort had been put into making all of us feel welcome and valued.

It also was reassuring to discover that Bainbridge’s Best go above and beyond the typical procedures that local law enforcement uphold when following up with registered sex offenders on our island.

Bainbridge’s Marine Patrol Unit is often referenced as outstanding for marine emergency response for larger police departments and is a model for Homeland Security.

I also gained insight to the many challenges the department faces, such as limited personnel and equipment, as well as the public misinformation about what the department really does. They do so much with what little they have to work with, and each officer is very dedicated to our community.

I would highly recommend anyone interested to participate in this great program and encourage all of you to apply for the next academy in the fall. I have gained a new respect for the B.I. Police Department, and I feel very secure knowing what sort of people are protecting and serving my family, my neighbors and our island.
