Priorities should be schools, environment | Letters | May 8

It is imperative that we give support to our local schools by voting “yes” on the bond issue. Wilkes School is poorly designed and aging sadly. The decision to replace it is not only an economically sensible choice, but a far more superior one from an educational standpoint.

The new Wilkes will not only save energy and operating expenses, it will provide an excellent learning environment. Studies have shown that with green building features – such as natural day lighting and natural ventilation – staff productivity and students learning capability increase significantly.

The school district has a strong commitment to energy conservation, recycling and/or reusing materials. Over 85 percent of the old BHS building was recycled or reused during the recent construction of the 200 Building. Approval of the school bond will be a clear statement of our priorities and commitments to our children and the environment.
