To the editor:
It is time to stop spending millions to encourage the “development” of Bainbridge Island. (We recently learned that members of our current city council were in favor of subsidizing a housing project on the Suzuki property to the tune of $7 million.)
Joni Mitchell famously wondered about the wisdom of paving paradise to put up a parking lot. The truth is that plenty of us “low” income residents like this place the way it is and wish that our city council representatives would rein in their largess and stick to our comprehensive plan. We’re aware that there are dollars to be made, but some things are just too expensive — namely, the permanent loss of forest/greenhouse gas sequestration, groundwater depletion, increased sewer discharge/spills, habitat and species loss, traffic, aggravation, air pollution and toxic runoff.
Having said that, we hope that you’ll join us in supporting Michael Pollock for the District 6 South Ward position. He’s a financial and environmental conservative with a deep understanding of government, climate and the natural environment. In sum, we feel incredibly lucky that a disciplined decision-maker with Michael’s credentials and abilities has stepped up. Now it’s our job to vote for him and to support a council who will work to protect our Puget Sound paradise.
