School budget: District’s openness is appreciated | Letters | May 1

The current economic situation has had a negative impact on all budgets this year. Already operating at a fiscal disadvantage, the Bainbridge Island School District’s administration is no stranger to running a well-organized and lean operation. With the exception of maintaining small class sizes, the district has been conscientious about researching budget reductions that will be required due to the state’s budget deficit.

Supt. Faith Chapel has tackled a budget shortfall during one of the worst recessions in our country’s history.

This fall and winter I have observed the new superintendent and her competent staff review costs in preparation for the anticipated severe education cuts by the state.

Through the arduous and painful process, the district office has been very inclusive with the school community in its decision-making process.

Subcommittees – comprised of administrative personnel, school staff, parents and teachers – looked at all aspects of the education process to determine which costs might be reduced, eliminated and/or altered.

The school district has been transparent about the budget process with school employees, parents and community through many staff meetings and public gatherings they have conducted.

Irrespective of what happens, the district administration has done its best to look at all the alternatives and include representatives from all the interested parties in proposing cost cuts. I applaud the district’s honesty and openness.
