Snow clearing triggers thoughts of turning soil | Letters, Jan. 9

During the recent storm there were several news items regarding individuals with various types of equipment who responded to the snow clearing needs of individuals and businesses.

It reminded me of a situation on Bainbridge Island in 1943. There was a large war effort campaign for residents to have “Victory Gardens.” and grow their vegetables.

The Clayton family at Fletcher’s Bay owned the Fletcher Bay dairy farm. They had a Case tractor, plow, discs, harrows and a two-wheeled trailer to carry the equipment.

Between Feb. 14 and May 23, Donald Clayton and I worked 24 days on the island converting sod to friable soil. Don was a junior and I was a freshman in high school.

The reason I can pin down the dates is because I recently found a diary I had kept from January to mid-June 1943.
